In the "Bel and the Serpent," one of the main causes of conflict was Father Price. For example, on page 339 when the Prices got home after Leah was allowed to hunt, Father Price asked, "Leah, who is the master of this house?"
"You are!"
"...You are causing trouble and I forbid it."
"I'm going with the men and that is final."
There is a lot of conflict in between Leah and Father Price. The interesting part is that Leah had always wanted to be close to her father and be one his good side. But this situation was the climax of Leah's growing intolerance of her father's orders.
She has had a conflict in herself for a long tme. She wondered if father can be wrong about the growing of the garden in Kilanga and not seeing that they should have gone home when they had the chance. Then, what else could he be wrong about? I felt that in this book, Leah finally over came her need to satisfy and follow her father. She now depended on Anatole for support. She has finally seen her father for what he is, "a simple, ugly man" (368). After all of her struggle for acceptance and understanding, she has sided against her father.

A constant theme of conflict is present in this book, but a lot in this chapter. The theme is conflicting ideas between what is old and what is new.
The first conflict in "Bel and the Serpent" is with Nathan and Tata Ndu. Nathan is trying to force God down Kilanga's throat while they still pray to their own heathen gods. Finally it came down to a vote where Christ loses, by a lot. Tata Ndu gave Nathan a chance to do what he wanted in Kilanga, but after a while with no progress, he says time is up.
The next conflict is with Leah and Nathan. Nathan has stayed the same with the firm belief that he would 'save' the Congo. At first, Leah strives to impress her father and be like him, but after a while she has grown accustomed to Kilanga ways and stops respecting her father. She outright defies him and he gives up on her, saying that she's not worth saving. Leah is tired with the old ways and is having fun with the new ones.
Leah is also the subject of conflict between Tata Ndu, Tata Kuvudundu and Anatole. She wants to hunt with the men, but Tata Kuvudundu thinks that it goes against the gods and their culture. Leah wins the vote and the witch doctor is salty about it. He pays them back later for going against his beliefs.

One conflict that appears in “Bel and the Serpent” is between Tata Kuvudundu and the Prices and Anatole. Tata Kuvudundu was very upset with all of them, because they were changing how things were being done and they were changing the old ways. The event that really aggravated Tata Kuvudundu was when Leah was allowed to hunt with the village men, because usually no women were allowed to ever go hunting. He warned the villagers that something terrible would happen to them and many believed him and were very cautious.

In "Bel and the Serpent" it seems that there is a lot of conflict between the characters especially after Ruth May's death. One conflict is between Orleanna Price and Nathon Price. This is a conflict that has been stated at the beginning of the chapter, "The Judges," and has grown until this chapter, "Bel and the Serpent." The main reason for conflict I see between the two is Ruth May. It seems through out The Poisonwood Bible, Orleanna tries to believe that Nathon Price caused the death of Ruth May by bringing them to Africa in the first place. On closer inspection, though it seems that there is an even bigger conflict for Orleanna within herself. In her chapters through out the book she talks to Ruth May, in conflict about whether or not she her self is to blame for her daughters death. It seems that Orleanna's sanity is a t stake and she must find a way to live on through her daughter's death.

Throughout the book and the chapter Bel and The Serpent, there is a continuous conflict between Nathan and his family. The conflict is that Nathan is too stubborn to leave the Congo. What is being contested is that since Nathan doesn’t want to leave the Congo, he is risking the respect of his family and his family as a whole. The main impact that his stubbornness has on his family is that since he didn’t want to leave the Congo, his youngest daughter dies. Ruth May dies because of his stubbornness and his family pays dearly due to this. It is not anyone else’s fault but Nathans for the death of Ruth May.

The main conflict in "Bel and the Serpent" is that Leah has angered some of the Congolese people by going hunting with them and killing an antelope. Tata Kuvudundu is extremely aggravated that Leah is doing this because she is a woman and it is not traditional for a woman to be hunting. Leah makes it even worse because she has a stubborn attitude. After the hunt, she refuses her share of meat that is offered to her. She makes it worse by making a fool of Gbenye by throwing the meat at him, causing all of his friends to laugh. Tata Kuvudundu even threatens them by saying the animals are out to get them.
